Connect Locally

Ready to Live Your Best Life?

MEDC partners with regional organizations throughout the state to provide you with a real view of what it’s like to live and work in different communities throughout the state. These groups may be part of the local chamber of commerce, economic development team, young professional group or from a Back 2 Michigan organization.

These partners can best connect you to local information on housing, education opportunities, recreation, and community groups where you (and your family) can find “your people” and “your place.” Whether you are interested in living and working in a downtown urban location, want a more suburban option, crave wide open spaces, or just want easy access to fresh water coastline, Michigan provides it all.

What are your favorite things to do in the Flint and Genesee area after work or on the weekends? As a mother of two, I love all the family-friendly activities that Genesee County has to offer. When we’re not running from one sports activity to the next, we enjoy exploring the Flint Cultural Center, having lunch at the Flint Farmer’s Market, visiting local parks (like Formar Nature Preserve), and getting lost in the aisles of our amazing libraries.
What is your advice to young professional interested in living and working in the Flint and Genesee area? My advice for a young professional interested in living and working in Flint & Genesee would be to get involved! There are so many ways to connect with your peers in the area. The Flint & Genesee Young Professional committee makes it really easy to connect with your peers, learn about your community, and explore new places in the community. It’s such a supportive group of individuals that’s truly invested in seeing everyone in our community succeed.

Q&A
What are your favorite things to do in the Thumb region after work or on the weekends? Because we’re a four season state this changes with the seasons, but definitely watersports and hiking are top activities for me. Between our great access to water and variety of trails and walkable communities, these are great activities. Hitting up a local watering hole to have a Michigan craft beverage and connect with friends is another favorite.
What is your advice to a young professional interested in living and working in the Thumb Region? The beauty of communities like those in the northern Thumb region is that there is limitless opportunity to create new things and play a key role in whatever interests you. In larger, more populous areas you are just another person, but here you have the ability to make a real impact and be treated as an important part of the community.
In your opinion, what is special about living in a four-season state? As a North Carolina transplant, one of the first things I fell in love with about Michigan was the winter season. Growing up I hadn’t experienced much in the way of snow and winter activities, and this is now something I look forward to every year. There is also this rejuvenation that comes with seasonality, where every season provides a fresh start that is authentically refreshing.
