Innovation & Tech

A Tech-Forward Economy with Unparalleled Opportunities

Michigan is where technology, research and innovation pair with a fierce work ethic and legendary innovation. As the state that put the world on wheels more than 100 years ago, today Michigan represents the new guard in the automotive, mobility, semiconductor and other tech-forward industries. Because of this, some of the world’s largest tech companies including Amazon, Microsoft and Google are investing throughout Michigan and have open tech jobs ready to ignite your future.

Out-of-the-box thinking is valued here, and we have the infrastructure to support it. Among the innovation centers in Michigan are GM’s Global Technical Center and the Michigan Innovation Center in Warren — both of which stand out as cutting-edge hotspots for research and development. Entrepreneurs also thrive at the Michigan State University Innovation Center in East Lansing, which fuels the commercialization of groundbreaking products and services.

The University of Michigan’s Center for Innovation in Detroit is also underway, with a 200,000-square-foot hub. With top companies investing, expanding and creating new job opportunities across the state, there’s never been a better time to make your mark in Michigan.

Leading Career in Modernization

Whether it’s med tech, software design for autonomous vehicles or cybersecurity, Michigan is a hub for innovative tech jobs. Of note is General Motor’s Global Technology Center in Detroit with its more than 25,000 employees. The University of Michigan’s Center for Innovation also promises to be a significant source of talent-based community development and engagement, serving as a catalyst for bolstering pathways to tech jobs in Michigan.

Innovation extends beyond Detroit, too, as evidenced by the Upper Peninsula’s tech sector. Thirty-four tech startups were created in the region by entrepreneurs in 2022; and companies like Orbion Space Technology, DeployedTech and Steelhead Technologies contributed to the region’s generation of a combined $105.9 million in just one year. Michigan Cyber Range hubs like Wayne State University are also spread throughout the state, providing a platform for individuals to receive cybersecurity training with more than 40 industry certifications, exercises and workshops.

Tech Communities for Companies

Propelling Innovation and Driving Business Growth

Michigan’s tech communities play a crucial role in advancing the concepts and commercialization efforts of both startups and established companies. The MSU Innovation Center has helped businesses obtain an impressive 52 patents in 2022. SmartZones throughout the state also foster collaboration among tech companies, entrepreneurs and researchers with resources such as coworking spaces, incubators and accelerators. Launch by NTT Data, a Silicon Valley-based company, established its product-minded software development hub in Ann Arbor in 2010, leveraging its expertise to assist Fortune 500 and high-tech clients in achieving enhanced customer experiences and growth of revenue.

What Michiganders Are Saying

“What Michigan has is what a lot of other places don’t — a chance to live in a great town or a great state and be part of a global development community and also have a great quality of life. I think that’s rare, and that’s exciting.”
